Welcome to new members! 20 -year -old game development club 'Pandoracube'

At the 2022 Play Expo, I was able to check a very special booth, which was not an indie developer, nor is it a bust of college students who are passionate about game development. The main character is Pandoracube, a game development club of Sejong University Software Convergence University.

Pandoracube, which was first opened in 2002, about 20 years ago, is a historic club that is active today. There are more than 90 clubs, and the number of small and medium -sized game developers is gathering together to study the game development.

Nowadays, the perception of games is increasingly changing without distinguishing between age and old, but more and more students are interested in game development, but it is ambiguous to start to develop. Pandoracube has been leading the club for 20 years and accumulated the accumulated know -how, providing a curriculum that shares the knowledge necessary for developing games, providing an environment where new members can make the game they want.

Regardless of the university, I met with the executives who are leading the club at the cafe near the exhibition hall to listen to the pandoracube and the 2022 Play Expo.

It's really nice to meet you. Before starting a full -fledged interview, please introduce Pandoracube simply.

\ -Pandoracube is a game development club belonging to Sejong University Software Convergence College. It was first opened in 2002 and has been in operation so far, and people who are interested in game production gather together to learn each other and study related experiences.

\ -As a member of Sejong University, you can join other universities. Regardless of your department or school, you can think of it as a club that can be free for anyone who is enthusiastic about game development.

\ -Operation is largely divided into programming, design (planning), and art three parts, and if you join the club, you will receive the basic training for game development according to the curriculum given as a probation member for one year. Since being promoted to regular members, we have been operating a game project in earnest by collecting team members.

** If it was founded in 2002, it has been over 20 years! What do you think is the secret of a long -lived club? I'm wondering if you're working with seniors and seniors.

\ -As that aims for academic clubs, the acquisition is also well taken over as it is systematically operated/management. There are a growing number of people who are enthusiastic about game development, so more and more people are applying for clubs. I think these parts have been maintained for a long time because of these parts.

\ -The seniors are busy, so they don't have a chance to meet often, but they are promoting friendship between seniors and juniors through a seminar that runs once a year.

I heard that nearly 90 clubs are active. How is game development mainly done?

\ -There are slightly different from projects, and many people are developing games for six to seven teams, and some people are developing one person. Since the purpose of joining the club itself is to make the game you want to make, it is a culture that prioritizes creating the game you want. On average, four or five people gather together to develop a game.

It's a bit like a guild. All belong to Pandoracube, but they are gathered by team to make games. How is the team composition?

\ -In a weekly meeting, if you want to make a new game, you may be presenting a presentation. I want to make these games, but there is a way to announce that I recruit people, and I always report projects at each regular meeting.

\ -In addition to the regular meeting, there is a Naver Cafe we run. Among those who did not attend the weekly meeting, they are recruiting the team organically, posting recruitment announcements so that they can participate.

I have been to the literature and I personally wondered. You can participate if you have a heat on game development, but can you join literary students who don't know programming at all? Do you see something like a test?

\ -There is no test to join the club, and I am interviewing. Even if you don't know the programming at all, you can apply for a probationary membership system that allows you to develop a game through your own curriculum for each part. In fact, many literary students are still following the curriculum as a probationary member.

I wonder what kind of curriculum I learn during the probationary member.

\ -The curriculum is careful to lay the foundation for programming as much as possible. New techniques and tools are later considered to be a full member, and the curriculum is important to be based on the algorithm technique, the C ++ language, which is important for the basics of Unity and development.

** Then, what kind of activities can you expect if you look at the club activities of Pandoracube every year?

-After joining the first year, one year of apprenticeship is similar to the internship period. You have to follow the curriculum prepared by the club, so you don't have a relatively freedom, and there's no burden to follow the prepared process. If you are a full member, you will be recruiting team members and developing hard work in an environment where you can freely make the game you want.

** How much do you do in the exhibition as you do now?

-In the case of game jam, it is proceeding once a year, and when interested club members apply, the person will gather and make a game for a short period of time. The exhibition is different by year, but I want to participate once or twice a year. Of course, not all club members must go out, but they are working together to participate together.

I think there was a chance to participate in this 2022 Play Expo.

\ -In the last year and two years, the proportion of other university students tended to be quite high. As a result, I naturally felt that the diversity and the view of the game were widened. Based on this experience, we tried to create a different experience by promoting our club to the outside, and to create an opportunity to see club activities in a new perspective. I also want to inform our clubs to more other college students.

As it lasted for 20 years, there will be a lot of games that have been developed in the past, but the games that can be found on Steam have been limited. Is there a space to collect the works separately?

\ -The projects developed in the club have been archived in our Naver Café. Puting on platforms such as Steam and Google is the team members and PMs in charge of the project through the tops.

In addition to the Naver Café, most games made in Pandoracube are uploaded by operating a site called Pandora Store. If you are interested, you can visit and play the game.

\ -The existing clubs have a slightly avoiding release? The first game that was released on Steam was the game called 'Three Cards', and since then, the frequency of launching the game has increased. There is no reason not to be released, and because of the internal affairs of the team, the build is completed, but it seems that it is often not until the launch.

Now it consists of three parts: programming, art, and design, but as there are a lot of people, it will be fun even if the part is increasing like a real game company someday. For example, marketing or publishing?

\ -The club's size continues to increase, so it's true that the parts related to sound or launch support are unfortunate. The sound seems to have been composed by composing or making it, and I usually use free sound sources or purchased sounds. It is always welcome if you can recruit people who are interested in this part.

What games are the most elaborately developed in the club these days? Please introduce it simply.

-I would like to explain Parkto, but I personally think it's the hardest game. It's a game that clears the stage in a puzzle format, but the game is really original. It is a fun game that transforms the direction of the road moving in the process of making a car in a specific area, or using various methods.

\ -It is a game that the club is making one-person development. Nevertheless, the quality is good enough to compare with other games, and it is ahead of the launch.

Finally, I wonder how I participated in the 2022 Play Expo.

-If it wasn't hard, it would be a lie, but I felt a lot of reward. I came to the booth and played fun, and when I was interested, I wanted to say, 'The club activities that have been done in the meantime have not been in vain.'

\ -I had a memorable thing. My father and two sons came to the booth, and my sons were so fun to play the game. "Other booths too
